Background
Of Scottish background, Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish, is one of the characters in the game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He plays a major role during the Ultranationalist Crisis, a newcomer to the SAS and part of Captain Price's Bravo Team. Soap is one of the characters the player will assume the role of, and is the primary protagonist. His life is unknown after the events of CoD 4.
History
Soap's real name is John MacTavish. "Soap" begins his SAS Career hours before the six-day global conflict begins. He starts out as a Sergeant, unusual in that newcomers to the SAS are demoted to Trooper so that they must learn from the ground up. He is given a quick training session in weapons and techniques by Gaz, before being introduced to Captain Price and the rest of Bravo Team. Passing the Close-Quarter-Battle test (intended to be reminiscent of the real SAS "Killing Houses") he is placed on the team and briefed on the mission, to infiltrate and assault a Cargo Ship in the Bering Strait. On board the ship, they discover a nuclear bomb bound for Russia, though enemy MiGs interrupt their investigations, and Soap is just lucky enough to escape with his life, being forced to leap for the ramp of their helicopter just as it begins flying away which causes him to lose his grip just to be rescued at the last second by Price.
Upon completing the mission, Soap, Captain Price and Gaz move into Russia to extract the informant who supplied them with the intelligence for the Cargoship, a man codenamed Nikolai. Working in close conjunction with Russian Government Loyalists led by Sergeant Kamarov, they successfully extract Nikolai, though their helicopter is shot down by Ultranationalist anti-aircraft missile fire. Bravo Team, Nikolai and another SAS Operator are forced to fight their way through enemy lines, before being provided with support from an AC-130 Spectre Gunship, callsigned "Wildfire". They are extracted by helicopter under cover of heavy air support from Wildfire.
Soap's next mission would take him to Azerbaijan, with Bravo Team. Clearing through an abandoned village, Soap was witness to Khaled Al-Asad's execution by Captain Price. The next day, it appears Soap was designated the team's support man, being equipped with both an M249 and M21 sniper rifle. He was placed in charge of covering the team's retreat with the Minigun from a downed Black Hawk (destroying several Ultranationalist Helicopters in the process) and detonating the explosive charges placed at Phase Lines Bravo and Alpha.
MacTavish's final mission (that we know of) saw him infiltrating Russia as part of the joint task force of US Marines and SAS Operators in order to eliminate Imran Zakhaev's nuclear capability. He was in charge of destroying the electricity supply to the facility, and then, during the escape, provided all-around covering fire for their jeep as they made their way to the extraction site. Fighting fiercely at the bridge during the penultimate battle, he was thrown to the floor and severely injured by an exploding tanker. He was pulled into cover by SSgt. Griggs, moments before Griggs was killed, and was then witness to Gaz' execution at the hands of Imran Zakhaev. A heavily wounded Captain Price slid Soap his M1911 pistol, and Soap personally killed Imran Zakhaev and two of his bodyguards, before blacking out, before he recieved medical attention from Sergeant Kamarov.
Epilogue
After the end credits, the level Mile High Club loads where an unspecified SAS operative and his team (also known as the One-One Team) are storming a large jetliner attempting to rescue a hostage under a difficulty dependent time limit. The event takes place outside of the previous storyline and no briefing is given making it nothing more than an Easter Egg. The introductory monologue makes a reference to the film "Airplane!"[1]. It has become something of a fan favorite. Some believe that the mission is just for the Arcade Mode, others think it may be a hint to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the next game in the series.
Trivia
* In the F.N.G. training mission, Soap wears the Crew Expendable and Mile High Club clothing and armor, but doesn't wear a gas mask or hood.[citation needed]
* In the Crew Expendable mission, Soap wears a helmet and gas mask. This is shown on Soap's picture on the top of this page.
* In the other missions of the game, Soap wears the same clothing as Price and Gaz, but wears the same hat as Price.
Fate
* Kamarov says to Soap "You are going to be all right, my friend" so Soap might not die. Although it is also likely as a note to comfort him as he passes away.
* Despite MacTavish 'whiting out', he whites out differently to Jackson, (who's vision slowly erodes, whilst Soap's just turns white.)
* After you kill Zakhaev, your objective of surviving the escape is completed, which could imply that Soap survived.
* It is often thought that Mile High Club was Soap's next assignment after surviving the Ultranationalist campaign.
* Soap's kill record is the most impressive in the series. In 6 days, he destroyed 4 T-72, 3 BMP-2, 6 Ural-4320 trucks, 9 Mi-8 and hundreds, maybe thousands, of Ultranationalist soldiers.
* The news reporter at the end commenting on the Ultranationalist party and the ship could be on a television in a hospital as Soap is recovering from his wounds.

Captain Price
Appears in: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Rank: Captain (Lieutnant, 15 years (1996) before the main events of Call of Duty 4)
Affiliations: 22nd SAS Regiment
Birth: Unknown possibly 1960-70s
Death: Unknown possibly in Game Over (2011)
Weapon: M4A1 SOPMOD, M1911
Price, callsign Bravo Six, was a British Special Air Service officer and commando featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
In the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Price held the rank of Captain and led a four-man SAS squad from the Bering Strait to Russia to Azerbaijan and finally back to Russia. Under his command throughout the events were Gaz and Sgt. "Soap" MacTavish. Price often carried a modified M4A1 and wore a Boonie hat during field operations. Fifteen years previous to the events of Call of Duty 4, Price held the rank of Lieutenant in the Special Air Service, and was under the command of Captain MacMillan in a covert operation to assassinate Imran Zakhaev near Chernobyl, Ukraine. While Price was believed to have killed Zakhaev with an M82, Zakhaev survived with a severed arm.
Eventually, at the conclusion of Call of Duty 4, Price is severely wounded by Zakhaev's men during the exfiltration following a raid on a Russian nuclear missile silo. Shortly before losing consciousness, Price managed to slide his M1911 to MacTavish, who kills Zakhaev and his bodyguards when they are distracted by the arrival of a Loyalist helicopter gunship. Afterwards, a Russian medic can be seen trying, seemingly in vain, to revive Price.
It is unknown if Price's wounds are fatal nor whether or not Price is related to the Captain Price in the earlier games. Popular fanon suspects them to be father and son, as the two characters look very similar to each other. There is no other evidence to support the relation.
Captain Price is voiced by Billy Murray.
Trivia
* Captain Price was ranked #5 for top video game heroes in Game Informer. Unfortunately, they made the mistake to believe that he was the same Captain Price that appeared in Call of Duty 2.
* When Kamarov, Soap, Price and Gaz are sniping on the bridge in Blackout, if you snipe a group of terrorists fast enough, Price will say something like "Nice shooting. MacMillan would've been proud". This is a hint that MacMillan is probably dead (note 'would've') or that MacMillan serves somewhere else. He can also say "Macmillan would be impressed" possibly hinting that he might still be alive.
* If you look to your left while being taken care of by Sgt. Kamarov, you will see that the Russian medic slams his fist on Captain Price´s chest, a manuever called precordial thump, which is administered only once if ventricular fibrillation is witnessed with an electrocardiogram monitor, before CPR is started and not afterwards. Therefore it has to be assumed that Captain Price died on that bridge, with the Russian medic slamming his chest in despair, instead of performing advanced or even basic life support as taught today.
* After completing Mile High Club, A photo is shown featuring Vasquez, Gaz, Price and Griggs. It can be assumed that Price died since all who are present in the photo are dead (With Price's fate being unknown), supporting the theory that Price is dead.
* If you use the cheat 'no clip' on the console, you will see that the Russian medic "gives up", confirming Price's death. However, this may simply be the CPR animation sequence ending.
